We have recently returned from our Christmas Market jaunt where we covered quite a few places, including Basel in Switzerland, Strasbourg and Colmar in France, Freiburg in Germany and Budapest in Hungary. They were all pretty fantastic to be honest but on this particular occasion Colmar Christmas Market was the best in our book! The whole town was a winter wonderland and the set up just perfect for those looking to relax and take in the festive mood.
But…. Basel Mulled Wine, woo, well, that topped our favourite list there, pretty strong stuff that! Plus we had the added bonus of finding a vegan doner kebab shop (I know, vegan doner kebab, where do they come up with these things… it was fabulous) for those looking to try it, see Vegitat Cigköfte.
Freiburg was probably the most Vegan friendly of the Markets as we managed to find ourselves a vegan hot dog truck and a vegan stall packed with sweet treats.
Strasbourg had the wonderful element that their market was around the Cathedral which was very dramatic and the place had a fun vibe to it. Their mulled wine was good but I’m not a massive fan of star anise, but it certainly helped warm me up after the climb to the top of the cathedral.
Our last stop was Budapest and the markets there are also lovely and they also have the Sziget Eye, although we didn’t go on it this time, perhaps we might next time. Budapest is now one of those places I can’t wait to get back to. The scenery, the city buzz and the multitude of vegan eateries has made it an affordable and adventurous place to return to. While we were there we ventured to Napfényes Étterem which we can highly recommend. The portion sizes were enormous and it’s (IMO) very reasonably priced! Try and save room for one of their desserts!
Have a very merry Christmas everyone!
