Top 10 Coffee Shops in Newcastle Upon Tyne

Lifestyle / Thursday, March 2nd, 2023

When it comes to coffee shops in Newcastle you really are spoiled for choice. There’s so many of them scattered around, many in the town centre within easy reach of the train station. I have the luxury of living here, so I can venture a little further (still walking distance – for me at least) so places like Gosforth and Jesmond appear in my list as they are technically my “local”, but they are all well worth a visit if you happen to find yourself in the Toon for any reason.

It was tough, but I’ve narrowed it down to my all time top 10. I always start off with a long black in any coffee shop I try so I can get a feel for the coffee and then tend to branch out to a double espresso, oat milk latte or cappuccino, depending on the time of course!

Burds

Burds has gone straight into my number one spot. Not only is the coffee delicious, with beans from Pink Lane Coffee Collective, but the whole place gives off this incredibly chilled vibe.

Their instagram page looks like an art gallery and they put a lot of effort into providing great service. I have wiled away some hours here on the terrace, listening to bird song, the chattering of other people and just watching the world go by.

Burds is hidden away at The Gatehouse, Jesmond a short walk from the centre of town. Highly recommend it.

The Canny Goat

The Canny Goat is a fab find, right in the centre of town, but again hidden away (I love these places off the normal beaten path). I only found it through someone’s instagram post and knew I had to try it out. I mean come on… it’s the Canny Goat, such a great name! It’s a small coffee shop, but they make great use of the space and the team there are so friendly and welcoming which can sometimes be missing from many other cafes I’ve been to. I ordered my long black and nabbed a seat at the wall table in front of a quirky world map, I sat in front of Australia, which I took as a sign from MK to get my backside back there. The coffee was a delight, they actually roast their own coffee, which they clearly do well.

Camber Coffee (sadly closed now)

This is one of the first coffee shops in Newcastle that I tried out by myself. I’ve revisited many places I went to with Martin, so to attempt somewhere new was very strange. I’m glad I opted for Camber, it’s located in the city centre and has a great view up towards Grey’s Monument from the window seats, it’s bright and airy and along with tasty coffee, there’s a great selection for us Vegans too in terms of cakes and lunch/breakfast items. It’s a big cup of coffee, but thankfully, the flavour doesn’t feel diluted and it gives you a good excuse to sit longer as you savour it.

Laneway & Co

After I did a Google search of coffee shops, Laneway & Co came up and I went on the hunt for it. Again, in the city centre just off Grey Street, this is a busy little café that’s bursting with a modern, hipster atmosphere. As I waited to order my coffee there was a display stand on the counter with their sweet treat offering. There were two vegan options which both looked amazing, but I opted for the Strawberry Victoria cake which was gorgeous! They also have a reward card, I do love a good reward card!

North Shore Coffee

When I visit North Shore in Grainger Market I always go for a double espresso, it’s so good! You have a double espresso here and you are zoom zooming through your day. They have their space in Grainger Market but they also have a coffee van located in Little Moor Gosforth which is open every day. They have a lovely choice of food and cakes to tickle your taste buds and it’s a great place to grab a seat in this bustling part of the market.

Société

This gorgeous little find is at the top end of Grey Street, right in the centre of town and although it’s a small place, if you can pick the right time, you can grab a seat and delight in their coffee and maybe, depending on the time of day, a cocktail whilst sitting outside on one of Newcastle’s busiest streets.

I love a double espresso here and sitting in the corner table inside, as I love the interior. Would be nice to see some vegan food options so I can get my cake fix too!

Ouseburn Coffee Co. at Harvest

I found this place by accident, I was wandering into Jesmond when it started to rain and I popped in to grab a coffee and wait for the down pour to end. A beautiful space, lots of light and a relaxed atmosphere that was very welcoming. The coffee was strong and delicious and I’ll admit it, I had cake, I had to, it was calling to me, Lemon Drizzle Cake, yes, please and thank you! If you can’t make it out to Jesmond and want to stay in the city centre, you can always get a taste of their coffee in Fenwicks Foodhall.

Baby Grey

This is a lovely Gosforth option. It’s always a good place to stop for a caffeine fix and for many, their bakery offerings in the window are a real invitation to pop in. They have a very nice window seat that I like, a real “people watching” spot. The coffee, like all on my list, is super tasty. I wouldn’t put any coffee shop on my list that didn’t give me that caffeine high.

This place can get very busy, especially at the weekend brunch rush. There are seats outside too which is lovely when the weather is a bit better of course.

Cake Stories

Another place I found by accident when out exploring, Cake Stories in Jesmond has a glorious range of cakes with many vegan options, I couldn’t resist the Oreo Monster Cake and had a seat outside in the sunshine.

I also ventured there in the winter months and had the Not Your Traditional Carrot Cake, incredible. The coffee here is outstanding too, packs a real punch.

Etto

Just because it’s number 10, doesn’t detract from how fab this place is, it’s my local and compared to the other places, practically brand new. A lovely spacious café with a large terrace for the sunnier months. They have fabulous coffee and a refill policy (which is very unusual) where you can get a refill of your coffee for £1.

Did I mention the cakes… they’ve got a great selection and on my last visit it was the Sassy Brownie. I was on a sugar rush all day after that but it was worth it.

Etto can be found at 33 The Gosforth Centre.

Some other places I’d like to mention in and around the Newcastle area and those are; Gosforth Traders, Fern at Jesmond Dene House, Cullercoats Coffee in North Shields, Regular Jo’s in Tynemouth and actually AMT in the train station itself.

So get out there and find your favourite coffee shop!
