Less than 24 hours in Rome? You can still pack in a lot of sightseeing!

Last week, we arrived in Rome around 1:45pm having got the train from Ciampino to Termini. We’d already booked our night in an apartment suite just next to the Vatican, so we decided to walk from Termini, straight down Via Cavour, which eventually spits you out between the Colosseum and Vittorio Emanuele monument. Having flown in under a thick covering of cloud and spots of rain, the sun was now belting out through the clearing skies, so we stopped for a while to eat our sandwiches and grab some water all within the view of Trajan’s Forum. Feeling refreshed, we […]

Getting Wild in Surfers Paradise

Keep your hair on, I mean wildlife people! If you’re like me, you might be thinking that Australia is awash with snakes and spiders just waiting to jump out at you and you will no doubt have heard the advice of checking under the toilet seat (which I did religiously) just in case a redback spider was lurking there. I also spent a good deal of time scanning rooms for the great big huntsman I’d seen so many photos of. Thankfully, I didn’t see any spiders on this holiday, so my blood pressure remained pretty normal, but the wildlife we […]

An epic Sunrise in Surfers Paradise

I am not a morning person, I will be the first to admit this, so when Martin advises me that we’d need to be up and out for 5am to go and watch the sunrise, I immediately tried to figure out how many hours of z’s I was actually going to get that night, I was not going to get my 8 hours! However, I haven’t actually watched very many sunrises in my time and I thought that this would be the best place to get some in the memory bank! So alarm goes off at 4.45am (remember, we’re only […]

Arriving in the wonderful land of Oz – Part 1 of our Australian Adventure

Going to Australia had been on my bucket list for a long, long time after spending over a decade listening to Martin and his old uni friends talk about their gap year in this magical place called “Manly” and it seemed important to me to experience this place first hand so I could see what they were talking about. We had a great itinerary planned, having waited so long to actually make the trip, it was vital we fit in as much as we could, so the plan was to start off in Sydney, fly up to the Gold Coast […]

Taking on the mighty Swinica

“There is no fun without risk” That’s the exact words that came from a fellow hiker on his descent from Swinica summit. We were just coming up to the section where the via ferrata chains began and this guy came flying down the steep slope with a big smile on his face and came to a skidding halt a few inches from the edge of a drop, spoke his words of wisdom then just carried on! Having already had my success in getting to the top of Giewont and breaking the notion that I was afraid of heights, I was […]

An Epic Hike to Morskie Oko

If you go down to the woods today… you’re sure of a big surprise! Never has a truer word been spoken on this occasion. The plan: Get up and out for 4am, walk to Morskie Oko (not bus – Walk) go see the beautiful lake, climb up to Czarny Staw pod Rysami Lake, clamber back down, then get the bus back to Zakopane. Already this was a tall order, we knew that this was just over 30km round trip, one of the longest hikes we have done in one go. I’d spent the following evening googling the walk from Zakopane […]
