The Pentland Hills – A little taste of the highlands with easy city living.

I was utterly amazed at how incredibly beautiful the Pentland Hills are. Having travelled up to the Scottish Highlands and marvelled at it’s natural beauty, the lochs, the rolling hills covered in heather and the wildlife you can see in fields that go on forever, I would not have imagined that you can get a little taste of this epic scenery just a short hop from Edinburgh. We got up early one Monday morning in July and decided to walk to the Pentland Hills (that’s 8.5 miles from where we are staying), we could have walked to Princes Street and […]

Springtime Hiking in Spoleto

So, it’s just before 8 in the morning, the sky is blue, the birds are singing, the dogs are barking and the Italian countryside awaits us. I don my trusty pink starburst yoga pants and my all weather jacket and we hit the road for our trek of the holiday the Giro dei condotti. I’m freezing! The sky may be blue, but after 5 minutes outside, so is my face! The joys of Spring I suppose. No matter, after walking uphill at a vigorous pace I soon begin to heat up and with the sun steadily climbing the temperature starts […]

Unsupersize Me – A real life, no nonsense journey to good health

I think I can safely say that many of us at one point or another have sat down and and watched with wonder programmes like The Biggest Loser, where there seems to be a universal template: Take morbidly obese people, work them ragged all day every day in the gym, make them throw up (because you haven’t worked hard enough if you haven’t thrown up now have you!) then you pit them off one against the other, turning them against each other and showing the world how quickly we will stab each other in the back just to get ahead. Regardless of how the current year is gone, there is always that little spark signalling a new beginning, a chance to start over again or an opportunity to top the previous […]

Vegan Falafel with homemade wholewheat flatbreads

Martin has had an inkling for falafel for a while now, so I had a bit of time on my hands and thought I’d give it a go.  It was a great dish, quick and easy and leftovers for lunch the next day… perfect in my book! Baked Vegan Falafel with homemade wholewheat flatbreads Makes about 12 balls 2 cans of chickpeas/garbanzo beans 1  onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 3 tablespoon fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped 1 tbs lemon juice 1 tablespoon dried coriander 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon dried red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons flour 2 teaspoon […]

Travel Bug, a trip to Italy!

We have decided this year that we will take a proper holiday, one were we will actually be tourists for a change, so having looked at the cost of flights we’ve decided on a trip to Italy.  It’s an understatement when I say “I Love Italy”, the place is truly gorgeous and steeped in historical culture and the things you can see and do there would take this lifetime and the next to do justice! So, we’re already thinking a few nights in Rome, then jump on the train up to Pisa where we can take a day trip into […]
